F2 Runway Show During FOCUS

I was eager to attend the latest runway show during the Fall/Holiday 2011 LA Market. The show was titled, “F2 Runway Show” and featured brands located inside the California Market Center. The lucky designers showing were: Zuur Jeans, JewelWraps, Tyler Kim, Luii Jackets, Lina Mendoza, Pouch and Annie & Jade by Annie Le. Zuur Jeans made its debut during LA Fashion Week in March 2011 and are designed by Miguel Estrada right here in good ‘ole LA. Zuur Jeans is known for the comfy fit and soft fabrics.

I know it’s a little early to be thinking about coats and jackets, but I saw some really cute jackets from Luii Jackets. They offer light as well as heavier jackets. So even in 60 degree weather, you can add a Luii Jacket to layer with a cute tee or tank, jeans and heels. Lina Mendoza and Tyler Kim showcased breezy separates.

Focused Buyers Home In on Accessories, Immediates at L.A. Market

New brands found trade show exposure at Focus Apparel and Accessories Show, which is held during all five L.A. Fashion Markets at the CMC.

Held on the CMC’s 13th floor from Oct. 15 to 17, the show featured 40 brands, an increase from the 14 brands that exhibited at the August show. The show attracted crowds with special events such as seminars with retail consultant Mercedes Gonzalez of New York–based Global Purchasing Companies and fashion shows co-produced by Fashion Business Inc.

Newport Beach, Calif.–based label Annie and Jade by Annie Le made its trade show debut at Focus. Founder Annie Le said the show was a good vehicle for novices. “It’s an affordable show. If I get buyers to look at my clothes and some exposure, it’s okay,” Le said.

Jacksonville, Fla.–based retailer and wholesaler Emily Moody said the show was a good place to sell accessories. Her biggest orders were for belts and bracelets made by her company, Anomaly, with wholesale prices ranging from $10 to $13.

The Next Big Thing Is Up and Coming: The Demand for Emerging Fashion

Looking around, it appears that there is a youth frenzy in every creative industry. From music to art to fashion, people are going crazy for everything indie. Retailers like Urban Outfitters are taking their cues from young designers, and the young populations of urban cities are looking to be outfitted by fresh and exciting brands. Yet, beyond the simple intuition of its presence, it is hard to determine the actual market size that exists to support emerging designers.

Another issue is that on the surface many designers appear to be doing well, with spreads in fashion magazines and constant coverage on blogs. But for a designer to break into a profit generating cycle and really "do well," the designer must expertly manage his or her brand's growth while juggling cash flow issues and a very pesky fashion calendar.

Since it is difficult to directly discern the success of emerging fashion labels, we decided to look to other factors in order to put evidence behind what we felt was a growing trend of consumers becoming comfortable with buying the work of new designers.

The first trend we noticed was brand exhaustion with regard to the majors in the fashion industry. Companies like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Prada are backed by eponymous corporate entities that provide distribution outlets, large advertising budgets, and a worldwide presence with flagships in the largest luxury-consuming countries.

As major luxury goods companies realize this change, sale sites will likely receive blowback from the brands. Already, Cartier is suing Haute Look for selling used Cartier products.

For the new designers who choose to sell through sites like Gilt, many receive their largest production orders from these sites even before the clothes are produced. Depending on the site, the designer will receive placement among top designers (Gilt) or lower level designers (Haute Look, Rue La La). This choice drastically affects their brand identity and is a factor in defining which boutiques will carry their clothes in the future.

LOS ANGELES — The market, which ran from Sunday to Wednesday included ... Brighte, Focus Apparel & Accessories Show and the showrooms in the California Market Center ...

Purchasing close to season, retailers sought items that could be delivered within two
months, but vendors also saw buyers who shopped holiday, resort and spring collections.

Overall, retailers’ budget constraints appear to be easing slowly even as the economy
struggles to recover, but keeping prices affordable remains paramount.

Jasmine Afcharieh, co-owner of Boulmiche, a fashion retailer with California locations in Brentwood and Beverly Hills, said she is reining in retail prices and business is up compared with a year ago. “We used to have beaded, really dressy dresses that were $500 and $600, but now the price range has come down — $200 to $300 is what we sell better,” she said. Vendors have adjusted to the price pressures.

Handcrafted details resonated with retailers. Sophie Monet, a jewelry line from Venice, Calif., used ebony wood, zebra wood and shedua as warm bases for gold leaf, turquoise and other accents in rings and necklaces wholesaling from $20 to $68.

“Everybody responds to the wood because it’s different,” said Sophie Monet designer

Slow but Steady for L.A. Fashion Market by Andrew Asch, Deborah Belgum, Rhea Cortado and Alison A. Nieder

The secret to success in the recent Holiday/Resort market, held Aug. 8–11 in downtown Los Angeles’ Fashion District, seemed to be booking buyer appointments ahead of time. A jam-packed trade show schedule put a dent in business at the California Market Center.

For Peter Jacobsen, owner of the Creative Concepts showroom, the turnout at August market was an improvement over last year. For Jacobsen’s customers, the August market in Los Angeles is a chance to view a collection in its entirety, rather than racing through an edited collection at the Las Vegas trade shows.

Although other buildings in the Los Angeles Fashion District kicked off market on Monday, several showrooms on the CMC’s second and third floors opted to open on Sunday for retailers who prefer to travel and shop over the weekend. Sharon Koshet of the Sharon Koshet Sales showroom on the third floor said Sunday was her busiest day.

This was the first trade show for Los Angeles–based glove maker Gaspar Gloves, which was showing at Focus, located on the CMC’s 13th floor.

“The idea is that gloves are not only for keeping hands warm, they are a fashion accessory,” said Tibor Balazs, director of sales and marketing.

"I was invited to see the Designer Launchpad fashion show at the California Market Center (CMC) during the last market week. These shows are a great way to see new up-and-coming designers and their collections. This show was busier than the previous one I attended during the last LA Fashion Week.

My favorite line from the show was Kerryn Leigh. It consisted of great basic pieces that can be mixed and matched for numerous looks. This line is one that I could see making its way into my closet.
